Spring weather is giving way to the sweltering temperatures of summer in Massachusetts this weekend.
The National Weather Service is predicting that most of the region will see “significant” heat on both Saturday and Sunday.
The service is forecasting that in Boston it could feel as hot as 95 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday.
The service has issued a heat advisory for most of Massachusetts, which is in effect from 8 a.m. Saturday through 8 p.m. Sunday.
If the highs on Saturday reach the mid to upper 90s on Saturday, the service said it would set a new record high for the day and month.
“The season’s first widespread significant heat and humidity continues through Sunday,” the service said. “Saturday night will be especially uncomfortable with dew points in the mid to upper 60s and overnight lows struggling to fall below 70.”
There will be a chance of showers and thunderstorms late Sunday into Monday, with cooler weather expected as the new workweek begins, according to the weather service.
The expected high temperatures have Boston officials rushing to ensure that at least a “handful” of the city’s splash pads are operational to offer some relief at neighborhood parks.
“By Friday afternoon, we will know exactly which features in the City will be operational over the weekend and we will post on the Parks Dept social accts,” the Boston Parks and Recreation Department said on Wednesday.
We plan to have a handful of functional spray features spread throughout the City in advance of this weekend's heat wave. By Friday afternoon, we will know exactly which features in the City will be operational over the weekend and we will post on the Parks Dept social accts.

Below, what local meteorologists are saying about the heat forecast:

If you want to cool off this weekend the coast will be the place to be. What a contrast for Sunday within 30 miles. Does Logan sea breeze happen? If so no records. pic.twitter.com/z1UDQzO0Np

Temperatures shoot into the 90s for a large chunk of New England Saturday with afternoon thunder scattered in Northern and Western New England, mostly initiated in the mountains. Elsewhere, probably not enough cold/hot clash for storms – too hot thru a deep column of atmosphere! pic.twitter.com/edqkxp01Ln

Heat continues Sunday, as does haze and an uptick in humidity…with a slowly approaching cold front raising the potential for scattered thunder Sunday afternoon to evening in Northern/Western/Central New England, and perhaps Sunday eve farther south and east. pic.twitter.com/QHqUMy8NZ6

Our forecast of 93 degrees in Boston for both Saturday and Sunday would tie the record for both days (1921, 1959). If the wind can go truly southwest (rather than south-southwest) that would spend more time over land (rather than traversing Narragansett Bay) and 96-ish possible! pic.twitter.com/dSz6qwziT0

🥵HOT WEEKEND! We will likely set new records this weekend, with high temperatures crossing into the 90s. The heat index (or what it will feel like) will reach the upper 90s! #wcvb pic.twitter.com/iXTz0zgmUQ

Humidity will go up this weekend, but won't be the worst you feel this summer. @Boston25 #boston #mawx pic.twitter.com/8TN7m4UgbA

Heat exhaustion possible this weekend. Should limit any really strenuous activity. Leave that for the cooler days next week: https://t.co/kTb5ukVhQh
